About Us

Small Bore Books is based in Whanganui, Aotearoa New Zealand. The imprint started life in a former rifle range (hence the name) but is now located in a house built in 1950 entirely from concrete water tanks.

Emma Bugden and Frank Stark are joint editors of Small Bore Books. Our CVs include stints as curator, journalist, archivist, sub-editor and film producer.

Independence and a sense of agency is pivotal to how Small Bore Books operates. Each of us started our career by setting up an independent art project space and an ethos of DIY underpins the operation. Wherever possible, we aim to undertake the entirety of production, from editing, design, printing and assembling a book to distribution.
